Area 2 Overview
Keeping the foundational information from Area 1 about how human beings take in and make sense of information, in this section we will examine behaviorally based leadership theories that apply to the leader-follower relationship.
AREA LEARNING OBJECTIVE: The participant will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of themselves and their organization on leader-follower interactions to include areas of high performance and identifying areas for improvement in a writing assignment shared with peers.
Lesson 3: Motivational Theories
In lesson three, we will discuss
- Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
- Expectancy theory of motivation
- Goal setting as a motivational theory
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- LO1: Participants will be able to match intrinsic and extrinsic motivation with the appropriate definition in a knowledge check quiz.
- LO2: Participants can correctly evaluate the source of a lack of motivation to one of the three components of the expectancy theory in a short case study.

- LO4: At the end of this lesson, participants will be able to evaluate their own organization’s improper use of demotivating goals that may be affecting motivation through participation in a discussion question.

Lesson 5: Motivation Through Consequences
In lesson five, we will discuss
- Operant conditioning
- Rewards, punishments, penalties, and negative reinforcement
- Observational learning
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- LO1: Participants can correctly match leader strategies that can be applied in operant conditioning to a list of leader behaviors in a second list.
- LO2: Participants can categorize leader strategies into groups that likely increase future behaviors and groups that likely decrease future behaviors in a knowledge check quiz.
- LO3: At the end of this lesson, participants will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of their own organization’s use of operant conditioning strategies through participation in a discussion question.
Lesson 6: Growth Needs & Rewards
In lesson six, we will discuss
- Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
- Identifying growth needs
- Hackman & Oldham’s chart for High Growth Needs followers
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- LO1: Participants can rank each level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs from lowest level needs to the highest level needs.
- LO2: In a brief scenario, participants can evaluate which of the three critical psychological states is missing for a high growth need individual based on their comments.
- LO3: At the end of this lesson, participants will be able to classify their own growth needs at work through participation in a discussion question.
Lesson 7: Followership
In lesson seven, we will discuss
- Kelley’s Followership theory
